I closed my Cash App account last month and the process was way more annoying than it needed to be. Two confirmation steps, an email verification, and a quick wait period. If you're trying to do the same, here's the actual path that works.
Important thing first – cash out your balance before you start. Once the account is closed, that money is much harder to get back.
Cash out any remaining balance
Open Cash App. Tap your Balance at the top. Hit Cash Out and pick either Standard (free, 1-3 days) or Instant (small fee). The money lands in your linked bank account. Don't skip this step or you'll regret it.
If you have a Cash Card, withdraw at an ATM or transfer the funds out. Also check your stock and Bitcoin holdings inside the Investing tab. Sell those off if you don't want to deal with them later.
Close the account from the Cash App settings
Now the actual deletion. Open Cash App, tap your profile icon in the top right, and scroll to the bottom. You'll see Support. Tap it.
- Tap Something Else
- Pick Account Settings
- Choose Close My Cash App Account
- Confirm by tapping Confirm on the next screen
- Verify through the email Cash App sends you
The email arrives within a few minutes usually. Click the link inside it to finalize the closure. If it doesn't arrive, check spam.
What happens after you close the account
Cash App keeps some data for regulatory reasons but your account is locked and you can't receive payments anymore. Anyone who tries to send you money will get a notice that the account is closed.
Your $cashtag becomes available again after a while so someone else might claim it. Same goes for the linked phone number – if you set up a new Cash App account later with the same number, you start fresh.
Can you reopen a closed Cash App account?
Not really, no. Once you confirm the closure, the account is permanently gone. You can sign up again with the same email or phone but it's treated as a brand-new account. All transaction history, contacts, and Bitcoin holdings stay closed off.
If you change your mind during the verification step, just don't click the email link. The account stays open in that case.
Common issues that block deletion
Sometimes Cash App refuses to close the account. The two common reasons:
- You have a pending transaction that hasn't cleared
- Your balance isn't zero (even one cent will block it)
- An investigation flag is on the account for fraud or chargeback
- You owe money from a disputed charge that wasn't resolved
Fix any of these first. If you're stuck, contact Cash App support through the same Support menu and ask them to clear the block. Took me about 24 hours to hear back when I had to do this.
Got stuck somewhere? Tell me which step in the comments and I'll help you figure it out.
