Apps cache data to load faster but the cache pile up over time fills storage. Both iPhone and Android handle cache differently. iOS hides cache from users mostly, Android exposes it. This guide covers clearing both properly in 2026.

Clear Safari cache on iPhone
Settings then Apps then Safari then Clear History and Website Data. Wipes browsing history, cookies, cached pages. You will be logged out of every website but Safari runs noticeably faster after.
For one site only, Safari settings then Advanced then Website Data. Find the site in the list. Swipe left, Delete. Only that site clears.
Clear app caches on iPhone
iOS does not expose per app cache clearing. The workaround, offload the app. Settings then General then iPhone Storage. Find the app. Tap Offload App.
Offloading removes the app binary but keeps your data. When you reinstall (free, same app), cache rebuilds from scratch. Net effect, cache cleared, data preserved.
For apps where data does not matter (games, social), delete and reinstall completely clears everything.
Clear cache in specific iOS apps
- Chrome on iOS, Chrome settings then Privacy and Security then Clear Browsing Data
- WhatsApp, Settings then Storage and Data then Manage Storage to see and delete media
- Instagram, no built in cache clear, must offload or reinstall
- TikTok, Profile then Settings then Free Up Space
- Spotify, Settings then Storage then Delete Cache
Apps with built in cache clearing make it easy. Others require the offload trick.
Clear cache on Android, easier than iPhone
Android exposes per app cache clearing for every app. Settings then Apps then pick any app then Storage then Clear Cache.
This clears just the cache, your data and login stays. Apps download fresh cache as you use them. Always safe.
The Clear Data option in the same screen wipes everything including login. Only use when really needed.
Bulk cache clearing on Android
Most Android phones have a Device Care or Optimization tool. Samsung calls it Device Care. Google Pixel has Storage manager. Find it in Settings.
The tool scans all apps and offers to clear caches in bulk. One tap clears gigs of cache across dozens of apps. Way faster than per app cleanup.
Chrome cache on Android
Open Chrome. Three dot menu then Settings then Privacy and security then Clear browsing data. Pick time range, All Time clears everything.
Check what to clear, history, cookies, cached images and files. Tap Clear data.

When to clear cache
Cache itself is not bad. It makes apps faster. Only clear when:
- Storage is running out
- An app is misbehaving or showing stale data
- Privacy concerns (clearing browsing history)
- Selling or giving away the phone
- Strange app errors that might be cache related
Routine cache clearing is unnecessary on a healthy phone with adequate storage. Once a month bulk clear if storage is a concern, otherwise leave it alone.
Storage hogs to know about
Apps that accumulate the most cache on most phones:
- Spotify or Apple Music (downloaded songs count)
- YouTube (offline videos, video cache)
- Netflix (downloaded shows)
- Instagram and TikTok (video preview cache)
- WhatsApp (photos, videos sent in chats auto download)
- Browser apps (web page cache)
Start cache clearing with these if storage is low. They generate the most cleanable space.
Restart phone after major clearing
After clearing significant cache, restart the phone. Helps the system reclaim freed storage and reset background processes that might still have cache references.
Hold power button, slide to power off. Wait 10 seconds. Power back on. Fresh state.
Cache vs other storage types
| Type | What it is | Safe to clear? |
|---|---|---|
| Cache | Temporary speedup files | Yes, always safe |
| App Data | Your settings and login | No, loses your stuff |
| Documents | Files you saved in apps | No, loses files |
| Media | Photos, videos, music | No, loses content |
Cache is the only category that is always safe to clear. Everything else has consequences. Read what you are clearing before tapping.
How often do you clear cache? Monthly, never, only when storage warning hits? Drop your habit in comments.
