What 24H2 brought

Should you install 24H2 now
If you have a modern PC, yes. The performance and feature improvements are real. Updates after 24H2 build on it so getting current matters.
If you have an older PC (pre 2020) where Windows 11 was already a stretch, consider waiting or checking compatibility. Some users reported issues on older hardware after 24H2.
Common 24H2 issues
- Some audio drivers needed updates for the new audio stack
- Older Conexant audio chips had issues, Microsoft eventually fixed
- Some Asphalt and EA games had startup problems initially

Recall feature in 2026
Recall takes screenshots periodically and uses AI to let you search through them. Sounds creepy when described that way. Microsoft delayed launch to add encryption and opt in controls.
By late 2025, Recall is available on Copilot+ PCs with proper security controls. The data is encrypted on device. You can pause anytime. It does not capture in private browsing.
Whether it is useful depends on your work. Knowledge workers who jump between dozens of apps daily find it surprisingly helpful. Casual users mostly do not need it.
Updates after 24H2
Microsoft moved to faster smaller updates instead of big annual feature updates. After 24H2, you get monthly feature drops rather than waiting a full year for the next big release.
This is generally better for users. New features arrive faster. Bug fixes ship sooner. The pace is closer to how macOS releases features.
Check your current version
Win + R, type winver, hit Enter. The About Windows dialog shows your version. Look for "Version 24H2" or higher.
If you are on 22H2 or 23H2, you are behind. Settings then Windows Update then Check for updates. Install whatever is offered.
Before installing major updates
Standard pre update checklist:
- Back up important files
- Have at least 20 GB free disk space
- Plug into power (laptops)
- Update your drivers first
- Schedule a couple hours when you do not need the PC
The actual install runs in the background then asks for a restart. Final setup takes 20 to 40 minutes after restart.
