How to Use iPhone Focus Modes (Real Setup Guide)

iPhone Focus modes filter notifications and customize how the phone behaves during different times of day or activities. Sleep Focus silences everything overnight. Work Focus hides personal apps during work hours. Driving Focus locks the phone when CarPlay detects motion.

Setting up Focus properly takes 15 minutes and changes how distracting your iPhone feels. Most people never configure beyond the defaults, missing the real value.

Find Focus settings

Settings then Focus. You see the pre installed Focus modes, Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Personal, Work, Driving. Plus a plus button to add custom ones.

Tap any Focus to configure it. Three main areas, who can reach you, which apps can send notifications, and when the Focus auto activates.

Configure Do Not Disturb properly

Do Not Disturb is the most useful default Focus. Configure it once correctly, use it daily.

Tap Do Not Disturb in the Focus list. Set Allowed Notifications, who can call or message during DND. I add only immediate family. Everyone else waits.

Set Allowed Apps for important utilities, Calendar, Reminders, maybe a weather app. Skip social media and games.

Set Schedule, automatic activation. Mine triggers 9 PM to 7 AM daily.

Sleep Focus and Health

Sleep Focus connects to your Health app sleep schedule. iOS automatically activates Sleep Focus at your bedtime, deactivates at wake time.

To set up, open Health app. Sleep tab. Set your sleep schedule. The Sleep Focus auto follows that schedule.

What Sleep Focus does that DND does not, dims the lock screen, hides notifications until morning, even silences your alarms (until they are scheduled to go off). Truly distraction free.

Work Focus for actual focus

Work Focus is the underused one. Set up properly, it transforms productivity.

Allow only work related people, your boss, coworkers, team. Allow only work apps, email, Slack, Calendar, Zoom. Block everything else.

Schedule it for your work hours. Or trigger it manually with a button you can put in Control Center.

While Work Focus is on, Instagram, TikTok, games, personal messages all stay silent. You see them later when you turn off Focus.

Custom Focus modes

Tap the plus icon in Focus settings to create custom Focus modes. Examples I have set up, Reading (silences everything except Kindle and Notes), Workout (allows only fitness apps and a couple of people for emergencies), Movie Night (silences everything for 2 hours).

Each Focus can have its own custom Home Screen pages, Lock Screen, and watch face. Truly tailored to the activity.

Custom Home Screen per Focus

This is the killer feature most people miss. Each Focus can hide or show specific Home Screen pages.

Create a Work page with only work apps. Create a Personal page with everything else. Set Work Focus to show only the Work page. Personal Focus shows only Personal page. The iPhone literally hides distracting apps during the wrong context.

In any Focus settings, tap Customize Screens. Pick the Home Screen pages to show during that Focus.

Smart activation

Smart Activation lets iOS automatically enable Focus based on context. Triggers include location (Work Focus when you arrive at office), time (Work Focus during 9 to 5), and app use (Driving Focus when CarPlay connects).

Set up multiple triggers per Focus. Work Focus could trigger at office location AND during work hours. Either condition activates it.

Time Sensitive notifications

Apps can mark notifications as Time Sensitive. These bypass Focus modes (with permission). Critical alerts like medication reminders, urgent texts from VIPs, two factor auth codes.

Settings then Notifications. Tap any app. Enable Time Sensitive Notifications if it has the option. Now that app can break through Focus when truly needed.

Use this sparingly. Marking everything as Time Sensitive defeats the purpose.

Share Focus across Apple devices

Settings then Focus. Toggle on Share Across Devices. Now when you activate Focus on your iPhone, it activates on iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch too. One toggle, all devices respect it.

Useful for true focus. Otherwise enabling DND on iPhone does nothing if your Mac is still pinging you.

Focus filter for apps

Newer feature, Focus filters change what apps show during specific Focus. Examples, Messages filter shows only work conversations during Work Focus. Mail filter shows only work account during Work Focus. Calendar filter shows only specific calendars.

Configure in each Focus settings under Focus Filters section. Tap Add Filter. Pick an app. Set the filter rule.

Genuinely powerful for separating work and personal contexts on one phone.

What Focus mode would help you most, work, sleep, reading, exercise? Drop it in comments. Focus is the iPhone feature most people underuse.
