How to Speed Up iPhone (8 Real Fixes That Work)

My old iPhone 12 felt slow after iOS 17. Apps took longer to open. Animations stuttered. Battery drained faster. Some of it was the OS getting heavier, some was just years of buildup. Here are the 8 fixes that brought it back to life.

None of these require resetting your phone. All take less than 5 minutes each.

Restart your iPhone

Sounds simple but most people haven't restarted their iPhone in weeks or months. iOS gets sluggish from memory fragmentation over time. A fresh restart clears it all.

Hold the side button + volume button. Slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds. Hold the side button to turn on. Boom, faster phone.

Free up storage space

iOS slows down dramatically when storage is over 90% full. Check yours – Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

If you're past 85%, free space. Delete unused apps, offload photos to iCloud, clear Messages attachments. iOS works much better with 15%+ free space.

Turn off background app refresh

Apps that refresh in the background eat resources even when you're not using them. Limit which apps can do this.

Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Toggle off apps that don't need to update in the background. Keep it on for Messages, Mail, and other critical ones.

Reduce visual effects

iOS animations look smooth but they take processing power. On older phones, dialing them back makes everything feel faster.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Toggle on Reduce Motion. Animations become simpler and faster.

Also under Accessibility > Display & Text Size, toggle on Reduce Transparency. Blur effects disappear, but apps open faster.

Update iOS

Don't skip iOS updates if you're on supported hardware. Apple often improves performance in point updates. Settings > General > Software Update.

That said – if you're on an old iPhone like 8 or X, sometimes the latest iOS hurts performance. Stay on the older version if possible. Security patches are released for old iOS versions too.

Disable Spotlight indexing for unused apps

Spotlight indexes everything for search. The more apps with indexed content, the slower indexing runs and the more battery drains.

Go to Settings > Siri & Search. Scroll through your apps. For each app you don't care to find via search, toggle off Show App in Search.

Keep it on for Messages, Notes, Mail, contacts – useful searches. Turn off for games and apps you don't search inside.

Reset network settings

If apps load slowly because of network issues, reset network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth pairings disappear. You'll need to reconnect. But network performance often improves dramatically.

Battery health check

A degraded battery makes iPhone throttle performance. iOS reduces CPU speed to prevent shutdowns when the battery can't deliver peak power.

Check at Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If Maximum Capacity is below 80%, the battery needs replacing. Apple offers replacements for $69-89 depending on model.

Replacement immediately returns the phone to full speed. Worth it for any iPhone you plan to keep using for another year+.

Clear Safari and app caches

Safari accumulates GB of cached data over time. Clear it occasionally:

Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Wipes everything. Safari runs noticeably faster after.

For other apps, the only way to clear their cache is to delete and reinstall. Worth it for apps like Spotify, Instagram, TikTok that hoard data.

Turn off automatic downloads

iPhone downloads app updates, iOS updates, and music in the background. This eats CPU and bandwidth.

Go to Settings > App Store. Toggle off App Updates and App Downloads under Automatic Downloads if you want full manual control.

You'll need to update apps manually but the phone won't randomly slow down because something is downloading in the background.
