The name you picked when you first made your Epic account is probably embarrassing now. Mine was. Changing your Fortnite display name is free and takes 30 seconds. Doing it more than once costs nothing but Epic limits you to twice every 14 days.
Here's how to do it whether you're on PC, console, or mobile.
Change name through Epic Games website
This is the easiest method. Go to epicgames.com and sign in. Click your name top right, pick Account, then look at the General tab. You'll see Display Name. Click Edit next to it.
Type the name you want. The rules are 3 to 16 characters, no profanity, no banned words, and no spaces. Numbers and underscores work. Hit Save. The change is instant across every device you log into.
Why your chosen name might be rejected
Epic checks names against a banned list and existing users. Common rejection reasons:
- Someone else already has that name
- It contains a banned word (their filter is aggressive)
- It looks like an Epic admin or staff name
- It includes special characters Epic doesn't allow
- You're trying to use the same name within 14 days of changing it twice
If your name keeps getting rejected, try adding numbers at the end or using underscores. Almost every common gaming name is already taken so be creative.
Change name on PC or console in Fortnite directly
You can also do this without leaving the game. Launch Fortnite, hit Esc to open the menu, click the gear icon for settings, then go to the Account section. Click Update Display Name.
Type the new name, confirm, done. Same rules apply – 3 to 16 characters, no profanity. The game updates immediately and all your friends see the new name next time they look at your profile.
What about your console-specific name?
If you play on PlayStation or Xbox, you have two names: your Epic display name and your console gamertag. Fortnite shows your Epic name to other players in most cases. The console name only shows up when you're playing with that console's built-in voice chat.
So changing your Epic name fixes 90% of your visible identity in Fortnite. Changing your PlayStation Network ID or Xbox Gamertag is a separate process through Sony or Microsoft's account settings.
Mobile players
On iPhone or Android, the Fortnite app itself lets you change the display name from the same in-game settings menu. Or use a phone browser to log into epicgames.com – same as desktop. The web method is honestly faster than the in-app one because you don't have to launch the game.
If you're on iOS, Fortnite is back on the App Store via the AltStore or the official Epic Games Store in the EU. Either way the name change works the same.
How often can you change it?
Epic allows two name changes every 14 days. After your second change, you have to wait 14 days from the date of the first change before you can change again. The timer doesn't reset just because you only changed once – it's a rolling 14-day window.
So pick something you actually like the second time. Otherwise you're stuck with whatever it shows for two weeks before you can fix it.
What's the worst Fortnite name you've seen? Drop it in the comments. I want to see if you can beat mine from 2019.
