AirTag is Apple’s small tracking device that lets you find your keys, wallet, backpack or any item you attach it to using the Find My app on iPhone, iPad or Mac. But sometimes setting up AirTags feels tricky for many reasons, e.g., the AirTag is not connecting to your iPhone, the battery tab is hard to remove, you cannot find it in Find My or you accidentally paired it to a family member’s account.
Heads up before you start. AirTags only work with iPhone, iPad and Mac. They do not work with Android. Trust me on this, no third-party app makes it work either.
This easy guide will help you set up AirTags on your iPhone by walking you through the activation steps, explaining how to share an AirTag with family members and helping you fix the most common pairing issues.
What You Need Before Setup
Real quick. Check this list before starting:
- An iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 14.5 or later.
- Two-factor authentication enabled on your Apple ID.
- Bluetooth turned on.
- Location services enabled for Find My.
- The AirTag with battery tab still in place (do not remove it yet).
Got those? Now you are ready.
Step 1: Unbox and Activate Battery
- Pull the AirTag out of the packaging.
- Find the plastic tab sticking out. Pull it firmly. You should hear a small chime when the battery activates.
- If no chime, the battery may have been pulled already. AirTag is still active in that case.
The chime confirms power is now flowing.
Step 2: Pair AirTag to Your iPhone
- Unlock your iPhone.
- Hold the AirTag near your iPhone.
- A pop-up appears: Connect.
- Tap Connect.
- Pick a name for your AirTag (Keys, Wallet, Backpack, etc.) or create a custom name.
- Choose the matching emoji.
- Tap Continue.
- Confirm registration to your Apple ID by tapping Continue again.
- Tap Done.
Done. Your AirTag is now linked to your iPhone and appears in the Find My app.
Step 3: Test It Works
- Open the Find My app on your iPhone.
- Tap the Items tab at the bottom.
- Tap your AirTag name.
- Tap Play Sound. The AirTag should chime.
- Tap Find for precision tracking (iPhone 11 or later).
If the sound plays and the location shows in Find My, you are good.
How to Share an AirTag with Family
Heads up, this is a newer feature added in iOS 17. You can now share an AirTag with up to five people.
- Open Find My > Items.
- Tap your AirTag.
- Tap Share This AirTag.
- Tap Continue.
- Pick the contacts you want to share with.
- Tap Send.
Each person you share with can now see the AirTag location in their Find My app.
What If AirTag Will Not Pair
The pop-up never appears or pairing fails. Quick checks:
- Make sure Bluetooth is on under Settings > Bluetooth.
- Update iOS to the latest version. Some older iOS versions had pairing bugs.
- Hold the AirTag very close to the iPhone (touching it).
- Restart your iPhone.
- Make sure two-factor authentication is enabled on your Apple ID. AirTags require it.
- If still nothing, the AirTag may already be paired to another Apple ID. You will need that person to reset it.
I have seen this happen on AirTags bought used. Always buy new or directly from Apple to avoid pairing issues.
How to Reset an AirTag
If you need to start over:
- Press down on the back of the AirTag and twist counterclockwise.
- Remove the battery.
- Put the battery back in.
- Press down until you hear a sound.
- Repeat this remove-and-replace battery process FOUR more times.
- On the fifth time, the AirTag plays a different sound indicating it has been reset.
- Now you can pair it to a new iPhone.
Yeah, five times is annoying but that is the official method.
My Honest Opinion
AirTags work best for items you might misplace at home or in the car. For travel items, the precision tracking only works near other Apple devices. So in remote areas you might lose the trail.
Personally I keep one in my wallet and one on my keychain. Worth the money for the peace of mind.
Final Thoughts
Setting up an AirTag is a 30-second process once you remove the battery tab. Pull tab. Hold near iPhone. Tap Connect. Name it. Done.
While you are setting up your iPhone, you might want to configure Siri to your preference too.
