Google Bard was renamed to Gemini in February 2024. The Bard brand no longer exists. If you go to bard.google.com, you get redirected to gemini.google.com. Same AI underneath, completely different name and a much expanded product. Here is the full story of what happened.

The original Bard launch
Google launched Bard in February 2023, right after ChatGPT's rise. The initial release was rocky. Bard made factual errors in its launch demo (about the James Webb telescope). Google's stock dropped 9 percent that day. The reputation never fully recovered through 2023.
Google iterated through 2023 trying to make Bard competitive with ChatGPT. They added new models (PaLM 2), expanded language support, added image generation, integrated with Google services like Gmail and Drive. Improvement was real but Bard never caught up to ChatGPT in public perception.
The rebrand to Gemini
February 8, 2024. Google announced Bard was being renamed to Gemini. The new name aligned with their underlying AI model architecture (Gemini family). Three tiers launched, Gemini (free), Gemini Advanced ($20/month, also called Gemini Ultra), and Gemini for Workspace (enterprise).
The rebrand was more than cosmetic. New mobile apps for iOS and Android. Tighter integration with Google services. Gemini Advanced got access to the most powerful Gemini model and 1 million token context window.
Is Bard still accessible
No. The bard.google.com URL redirects to gemini.google.com automatically. There is no way to access Bard as a separate product. If you had a Bard conversation history, it carried over to Gemini automatically when the rename happened.
The product is now exclusively branded as Gemini. Even Google's help documentation has scrubbed most Bard references.
How Gemini compares to ChatGPT in 2026
Gemini caught up significantly. The free tier of Gemini is competitive with ChatGPT free. Gemini Advanced at $20/month rivals ChatGPT Plus.
What Gemini does better, Google Workspace integration (Gmail, Docs, Drive), real time web access in free tier, better at long documents (1 million token context window).
What ChatGPT still does better, image generation via DALL-E 3 is more polished, voice mode feels more natural, third party plugin ecosystem (now GPTs) is bigger, slightly better at creative writing.
Should you use Gemini in 2026
Yes for specific use cases. Gemini is genuinely the best AI for anyone deep in Google ecosystem. The integration with Gmail and Docs is unmatched.
For general AI chat, ChatGPT and Claude are still slightly more polished. But the gap closed dramatically through 2024 and 2025. Most users would not notice a huge difference between Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT Plus for everyday tasks.
The Bard lesson
Bad first impression matters in AI products. Bard's launch demo error followed it for a year despite huge improvements. The rebrand to Gemini was as much about escaping the Bard reputation as it was about technical alignment.
The lesson, AI product launches need to be flawless because the entire market is watching and one error gets shared millions of times.

What happens to old Bard links
Old conversation share links from Bard still work but redirect to gemini.google.com. Bookmarks pointing to bard.google.com redirect automatically. Saved prompts in your Bard history are now Gemini history.
Nothing was lost in the transition. Just renamed.
If you remember Bard from launch and have not tried Gemini, give the free tier a shot. The improvement is significant. Drop a comment if you have specific questions about Gemini features.
