I've used Windows for 20 years and I still discover keyboard shortcuts I didn't know existed. Windows 11 added a bunch of new ones plus reworked some old ones. Memorizing the right 20 shortcuts cuts hours off your weekly computer time.
This list is everything that's actually useful, not the dozens of shortcuts that exist but nobody uses. I tested each one to make sure they still work in current Windows 11.

Essential window management
These shortcuts handle multitasking, the most common daily Windows activity. Knowing these makes you visibly faster at the keyboard.
- Win + Left/Right Arrow snaps window to that half of the screen
- Win + Up Arrow maximizes window
- Win + Down Arrow minimizes or restores window
- Win + Shift + Left/Right moves window to other monitor
- Alt + Tab cycles through open windows
- Win + Tab opens Task View with all windows and desktops
Alt + Tab is the one most people know. Win + Tab is the powerful version that shows desktops too.
Virtual desktops
Windows 11 has solid virtual desktop support. Different desktops for work, personal, gaming. Switch between them instantly:
- Win + Ctrl + D create new virtual desktop
- Win + Ctrl + Left/Right switch between desktops
- Win + Ctrl + F4 close current virtual desktop
I have a work desktop with email and meeting apps, a coding desktop with VS Code and Terminal, and a personal desktop with Discord and browser. Ctrl + Win + Left switches between them seamlessly.
Quick screenshots
- Win + Shift + S opens snipping tool overlay
- Win + Print Screen saves screenshot of full screen to Pictures/Screenshots
- Alt + Print Screen copies active window to clipboard
- Print Screen alone copies full screen to clipboard
Win + Shift + S is the one to remember. It opens the modern snip overlay where you can drag to select any area. The screenshot goes to clipboard plus a small preview pops up in the corner.
Search and run
- Win key alone opens Start menu
- Win + S opens search directly
- Win + R opens Run dialog for typing commands
- Win + E opens File Explorer
- Win + I opens Settings
Just pressing Win then typing app name is faster than clicking through Start menu. Type a few letters of the app name and hit Enter to launch.

Lock and switch user
- Win + L locks the PC immediately
- Ctrl + Alt + Del opens security menu (lock, switch, task manager)
- Win + X opens power user menu
Win + L is the one to use when stepping away from your PC. Faster than clicking Start, your user, Lock.
Win + X opens a hidden menu with Disk Management, Device Manager, Power Options, and other admin tools quickly. Right-clicking the Start button does the same thing.
Text editing power moves
- Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + X copy, paste, cut (everyone knows but say it anyway)
- Ctrl + Z, Ctrl + Y undo, redo
- Ctrl + Shift + V paste without formatting
- Win + V opens clipboard history (must enable in Settings)
- Ctrl + Left/Right Arrow jumps cursor by word
- Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right selects by word
Win + V is the underrated one. Enable Clipboard History in Settings then Win + V shows your last 25 copy operations. You can paste anything from history, not just the most recent.
File Explorer specific
- Ctrl + N opens new File Explorer window
- Ctrl + T opens new tab in same window (Windows 11 22H2+)
- Ctrl + W closes current tab or window
- Alt + Left/Right Arrow goes back or forward in history
- Alt + Up Arrow goes up a directory
- F2 renames selected file
File Explorer tabs in Windows 11 22H2 are the upgrade everyone wanted for years. Ctrl + T works just like browser tabs.
System and emergencies
- Ctrl + Shift + Esc opens Task Manager directly
- Win + . (period) opens emoji picker
- Win + V opens clipboard history
- Win + Pause/Break opens System info
- Win + P opens projection menu (for second monitor)
Ctrl + Shift + Esc is critical when something freezes. Goes straight to Task Manager without the Ctrl + Alt + Del security screen.
Taskbar tricks
- Win + 1, 2, 3, etc launches the corresponding pinned app
- Win + T cycles through taskbar items
- Win + B focuses system tray
- Shift + click app opens new instance of app
Win + 1 launches the first app pinned to your taskbar. If you have Chrome as your first pin, Win + 1 launches Chrome instantly without taking your hands off the keyboard.
Accessibility shortcuts
- Win + Ctrl + O opens on screen keyboard
- Win + + opens Magnifier and zooms in
- Win + Esc closes Magnifier
- Win + Ctrl + Enter toggles Narrator
- Win + H starts voice typing
Win + H is the underrated one. Starts voice typing in any text field. Useful when you don't feel like typing or you need to dictate quickly. Better than expected accuracy.
The new Copilot shortcut
Windows 11 added Copilot AI integration:
Win + C opens Copilot side panel.
Useful for quick AI queries without leaving your current app. Type questions or commands, get answers in the side panel.
Memorize the top 10
If you only learn ten shortcuts, make it these:
- Win + Shift + S screenshot
- Win + L lock PC
- Win + V clipboard history
- Win + E File Explorer
- Win + I Settings
- Win + Tab Task View
- Alt + Tab switch apps
- Ctrl + Shift + Esc Task Manager
- Win + . emoji picker
- Win + Left/Right snap windows
Use these for a week and they become muscle memory. Daily productivity improves measurably.
