How to Turn Off PS5 Properly (3 Easy Methods)

The first time I tried to turn off my PS5, I just pulled the plug. Bad idea. Got a corrupted database warning the next time it booted. Took 20 minutes to repair. Don't do that.

There are three proper ways to shut down a PS5 and each one matters for slightly different situations. Here's how to do each one without breaking anything.

The controller method (most common)

Press the PS button on your controller to bring up the Control Center. Scroll all the way to the right and find the Power icon. Tap it. You get three options: Enter Rest Mode, Turn Off PS5, and Restart PS5.

Pick Turn Off PS5 for a full shutdown. The console saves any open game state, closes everything cleanly, and the front light fades to off. Takes about 10 seconds total.

The power button method

If your controller is dead or you can't find it, the physical power button works too. Hold the button on the front of the console for about 7 seconds until you hear two beeps. That fully powers down the system.

A short tap (less than 1 second) puts the PS5 into Rest Mode instead. Important difference. So watch how long you're pressing.

Rest Mode vs Full Shutdown

People get these mixed up. They're different things:

ModeWhat it does
Rest ModeLow-power sleep, charges controller, downloads continue, faster wake-up
Full ShutdownConsole fully off, no downloads, no charging, takes ~1 min to boot back
RestartFull reboot, useful when system feels laggy or after updates

I leave mine in Rest Mode most of the time so games download overnight. But once a week I do a full shutdown to clear the cache and let the system breathe.

When you should fully shut it down

A few situations where Rest Mode isn't enough:

  • Before you move the PS5 or unplug cables
  • After installing a major system update
  • If you'll be away for more than a few days
  • When the console feels sluggish or freezes randomly
  • During a thunderstorm where power could spike

For all of these, do the full shutdown via the controller method. Then unplug if needed. Pulling the plug while the PS5 is in Rest Mode is what corrupts the storage. The console's indicator light is the giveaway – if it's orange or pulsing, it's still doing work.

PS5 won't turn off?

If the console is unresponsive and the controller won't connect, hold the physical power button for the full 7 seconds until you hear those two beeps. That forces a shutdown.

If it still doesn't respond, unplug it as a last resort. Then plug back in and boot into Safe Mode by holding the power button again at startup. Safe Mode lets you rebuild the database and fix soft corruption. Use option 5 from that menu.
