AirPlay is Apple’s wireless streaming feature that sends audio, video or your full screen from iPhone, iPad or Mac to AirPlay-compatible TVs, speakers and receivers. But sometimes you want to turn AirPlay off for many reasons, e.g., to stop sharing your screen, your music keeps streaming to a random speaker, your iPhone keeps connecting to the neighbor’s Apple TV or you just want privacy.
Heads up. AirPlay has several different settings depending on what you are trying to stop. Trust me on this, knowing which one to turn off is the actual fix.
This easy guide will help you turn off AirPlay by walking you through stopping a current stream, disabling automatic AirPlay and turning off receiving AirPlay on your TV.
Method 1: Stop a Current AirPlay Stream
If audio or video is playing on another device right now and you want it back on your iPhone:
- Open Control Center (swipe down from top right on Face ID iPhones).
- Tap the AirPlay icon in the audio card (looks like a triangle inside circles).
- Tap your iPhone or AirPods to switch back.
Audio now plays on iPhone instead of the AirPlay device.
Method 2: Turn Off Automatic AirPlay to TVs
iPhone can auto-connect to nearby Apple TVs. Annoying when it picks the wrong one.
- Open Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity.
- Tap Automatically AirPlay.
- Pick Never instead of Automatic or Ask.
iPhone now never auto-connects. You have to manually pick a TV every time.
Method 3: Stop Screen Mirroring
If your full iPhone screen is showing on a TV:
- Open Control Center.
- Tap Screen Mirroring.
- Tap Stop Mirroring.
Screen is back on iPhone only.
Method 4: Turn Off AirPlay Receiver on Apple TV
If your Apple TV keeps accepting AirPlay streams from random people in your house or neighbors:
- On Apple TV, go to Settings > AirPlay and HomeKit.
- Pick Allow Access.
- Change to Only People Sharing This Home or Require Password.
Now only authorized people can AirPlay to your TV. Solves the neighbor-AirPlaying-to-your-TV bug.
Method 5: Turn Off AirPlay on Mac
On Mac you can disable being an AirPlay receiver completely.
- Open System Settings.
- Click General > AirDrop & Handoff.
- Toggle AirPlay Receiver off.
Your Mac will no longer show up as an AirPlay target on other devices.
What If AirPlay Keeps Activating
Sometimes AirPlay restarts on its own. Quick checks:
- Check Handoff. Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Handoff. Disable for stricter control.
- Make sure your iPhone and the TV are not on the same Apple ID.
- Restart your iPhone and the AirPlay receiver.
- Update both devices to the latest software.
Usually one of those settles it.
My Honest Opinion
Automatic AirPlay is one of those Apple features that sounds great but causes more confusion than convenience. Disable it. Manual AirPlay every time is more predictable.
If you have a smart speaker like HomePod, the auto-connection is more useful there. For TVs, manual is better.
Final Thoughts
Turning off AirPlay depends on what you want to stop. Stop a stream from Control Center. Disable auto-connect under Settings. Lock down receiving in Apple TV or Mac settings.
